The Grand Narrative

Only in Korea?

Cute advertisement for the Korean cosmetics brand Skin Food from last year (notice the cut of the nose).  These non-Koreans at least were a little nonplussed by it, but given everything I’ve said about Caucasians, cosmetics and Korean beauty ideals then I think it would have gone down rather well in Korea itself.

That’s so cute! :) It’s one of the most creative advertising ideas I’ve seen.

The reactions on your link showed pretty clearly that the Korean and East Asian focus on whitening products isn’t something understood or desired worldwide . . . but dang, knowing what I do know, that’s a monstrously cute ad!

I’ve been here so long that I was honestly quite surprised at that ignorance, but then I knew nothing about it either before I came here. But in its Korean context it is indeed quite cute and/or creative like you both say. For another example of a creative Korean ad, albeit one that would work anywhere, see here.

The first impression was cute, but now that I’ve been staring at it for bit longer, it’s slightly weird and would people actually buy this product even if they were Korean and wanted white skin?

    lalalalie,

while I usually encourage people to take a closer look at advertisements, probably I too would find this one a bit weird if I looked at it for too long! Seriously though, I think that most Koreans’ gut reaction would be that it was cute – very important here – and there are many similar products out there which sell well.

    daeguowl,

I did see that, but I get the impression that it has higher standards than most journals, and mentions that it particularly wants articles on North-South relations which any articles of mine on women’s body images and so on would be out of place in. But thank you very much for passing it on.
